Now through the end of February, artist Michael Boardman's artwork will be on display at the library. The collection, Year of the Bird: Avian Portraits & Field Sketches, features artwork centered around observing and sketching birds.
According to Boardman, "The excitement of crossing paths with a wild animal is an experience I work to capture in my art, and lately that has be centered around observing and sketching birds. 2018 was declared the 'Year of the Bird,' and I certainly honored this with many birding excursions. Birds, especially raptors, bring the sense of another world, another consciousness, danger and mystery."
Boardman's artwork is primarily created using watercolor and pencil. He chooses these mediums not just for their portability, but because of how responsive they are when he needs to record his observations quickly before the bird moves. He also uses reference photos and sketches completed in the wild to help inform his finished artwork. Boardman is a resident of North Yarmouth, ME. He has sketched birds at the Center for Wildlife and volunteered for the Avian Haven. He is currently completing the Maine Master Naturalist program. In addition to sketching and painting, he also runs a screen printing company called Coyote Graphics that markets his artwork on t-shirts and cards. Boardman's art can be see anytime during library hours. The library is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30am to 7:30pm and Fridays and Saturdays from 9:30am to 1:30pm.
