Week 3

1872

You arrive in 1872 with the objective to find essence from the artwork that inspired our first national park, Yellowstone. The landscape around you is beautiful, with pine-crested mountains and waterfall in the distance. You hear the howl of wolves in the distance. Nervous about a close encounter with them, you seek out the closest shelter, which turns out to be a cabin. You knock on the door and, thankfully, a kind guide opens it and lets you in.

Over a cup of tea, you explain to the guide, Rory, your business in Yellowstone. Rory is intrigued by your quest and is eager to help, but also seems a little distracted. Rory explains that they would love to help you, but they need some help from you in return first.

Rory's scavenger hunt can be found at the library!
If you're playing along at home, complete the activity below before moving on with the story.

Reunited with their badge at last, Rory is ecstatic! “Finally!” Rory says. “Hopefully this badge will make people will start taking me seriously now. Now that Yellowstone is a national park, we have lots of new visitors. This badge lets people know I’m a guide who protects both visitors and this park. It’s not an official job yet, but hopefully someday it will be. I think “park ranger” has a nice ring to it.”

Rory leads you to an art exhibit featuring photography by William Henry Jackson and paintings by Thomas Moran. “This the art that inspired the creation of this national park. I think you’ll find the essence you’re looking for here.”

Congratulations - you have received the third essence for the Preservation Potion! Stop by the library to collect a sticker for your Potion Tracker.

Remember, you will need to collect all seven essences in order to successfully brew the potion.
