Week 4

1900

You’re surrounded by hundreds of people and languages you don’t even recognize. Amid this crowd, you’re not sure how you’re going to find the essence, but suddenly your nose alerts you to the most wonderful aroma. Up ahead, past the immigration checkpoints, you spot a family enjoying a meal of foods from their homeland. You are positive this must be the essence you are searching for!

You arrive at a bustling Ellis Island in 1900. The Librarian has tasked you with collecting the essence of the most delicious family recipe brought to America with an immigrant family.

There’s just one small problem – you need to make it through Ellis Island's immigration checkpoints before you can reach them.

Visit the library to try our Ellis Island activity and learn about immigration.
If you're playing along at home, complete the activity below before moving on with the story.

Once you have successfully made it through immigration, your nose leads you to the family with the delicious meal. You share your quest with them, and they are delighted by your interest in their heritage. They happily share some of their food with you, along with a copy of the recipe that has been handed down in their family for generations.

Congratulations - you have received the fourth essence for the Preservation Potion! Stop by the library to collect a sticker for your Potion Tracker.

Remember, you will need to collect all seven essences in order to successfully brew the potion.

Where will the Librarian send you next?

Did you know?

Did your family come to this country through Ellis Island? Do you have favorite family recipes that have been handed down through generations?

Did you know you can learn all about your own family history at Genealogy Club? Genie Club meets at the library the first Friday of every month from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.
